Good tender BBQ. Not NC BBQ, but a short of Texas twist. But for just the same. Collards are great.

Not nearly as good as the Midlothian turnpike, so that's minus one star. Hot food, hot fries, great food as always. One downside, all of their soda flavors were out of syrup. Yuk.
(4)Will C.
Hush puppies were good. Meat was ok. But my BBQ standards are high.

Finally got to try Q Barbeque (difficult to leave the city for bbq) and would likely come back again. Two of us got a three meat platter with 2 orders of ribs (6 ribs total) and pulled pork with 2 sides. We got onion rings and corn pudding. It also comes with a roll to make a small sandwich. The pulled pork was good with a slightly vinegar taste. The ribs were also tender and had a really good taste. Ribs were probably one of my favorite in the area rivaling Buz and Neds. I liked the corn pudding a lot and the onion rings solid. The place is new and clean looking and a food comes out fairly quickly. I imagine the food is fairly consistent. Ordering and layout reminds me of Panera. Wasn't anything mind blowing but very good, tasty and fast.

My review was deleted because I hadn't confirmed my email so this may not be as great as the first go round but make no mistake I absolutely love their wings. You do not need sauce, they are bbq'd correctly and meaty and good. I have been there three times and the wings are my favorite. The ribs are good but not as OMG as the wings. The potato salad has a citrusy-sour taste that I can't get past enough to probably order again. The hush puppies and corn muffin are perfection. I will be returning sooner than I planned (got wings last night) because I have read some really good things on here. Can't wait until my mom comes to town so I can bring her here for wings. Customer service is always friendly and patient. I like this place and pray they never break my heart (customer service wise).

I grew up eating bbq at Hank's & Bill's Bbq in Richmond, VA. Then I was captivated by the brisket bbq in Houston, TX. Q Barbeque comes close to the brisket in TX and outshines the old standby's in Richmond, VA, which were North Carolina style. The meat is smoked to perfection. The ribs are so tender. The hush puppies are awesome! The corn muffin is sweet and not grainy - more cake-like. So good! We tried almost everything & their red potato salad is delicious and coleslaw is perfect - not too dry, not too soggy, crisp, fresh & tasty! The greens are great, mac & cheese pretty good, along with the rest of the sides. One thing missing from Q's that I can get in TX is a lady with home-made yeast rolls fresh-out-of-the-oven passing them out to takers, and warm home-made peach cobbler with Blue Bell vanilla ice cream on top as part of the platter price. Hint. hint!
(5)Kimmy C.
Decent food but very small portions for the money. If you get it to go make sure to put extra sauce on your food before you leave or you'll be eating dry food. Overall good food but not good value
(3)Dyanne W.
Excellent ribs!! Loved all of the sauces too. Had the beans, collards, mac and cheese and corn pudding. We enjoyed everything. Clean restaurant and friendly staff. Will go back for sure!
(5)Cary C.
The rub used on the ribs was good. No need for additional sauce. The greens were very tasty. Vinegar in greens was a very good touch. Mac and cheese was good. Corn podge was very tasty. Corn bread was moist and tasted sweety. Over all an excellent meal. Only concern is really the size of the side dishes. If you really are hungry you may wish to order a couple of the same thing if you really like the side dish. But was worth the stop.
(4)A S.
I was very pleased! The Mac and cheese was yummy! The corn bread was soft and sweet, which is the I way prefer it, and last but not least those ribs were great! They were smoky and fall off the bone delicious , and adding the sa-sweet sauce took it to another level! Definitely look forward to going back again!
(4)Suzanne W.
I've been here several times and the food is consistently good. I ordered the half rack of ribs, baked beans and the Mac N Cheese. The cashier was very friendly and helpful. Our order arrived in minutes. Ribs are meaty and the sides are glorious. You can't go wrong. I'm afraid that folks don't give this place a chance because it doesn't look like a dump. You are missing out!
(5)Michael B.
Food was ok but the service was more memorable and not in a good way. After ordering $50 worth of food to take to a picnic, as I was walking out the door I noticed there were no utensils in the bag. I went back up to the counter and asked for some plastic forks and knives. The manager overheard and came rushing over to let me know that the "package" I purchased was already "heavily discounted" and that they charge extra for the plastic forks but would include them "this time". This alone will ensure that I will never patronize this restaurant again.
(2)Mosa S.
First experience was alright. Had the brisket and rib combo platter. The ribs were excellent except 2 of the 3 ribs were so overcooked it put a hurting on jaw. Had the consistency of dried beef jerky. I should have said something. The brisket was too salty and tasted more like pot roast, rather than true bbq. The hush puppies were decent but a little too dry for my liking. The corn pudding was tasty. Pineapple hot dish was aaaamazing. Overall an ok meal. Wouldn't be my first choice of BBQ in the area but definitely enjoyed my experience even with the few gripes. If and when I do return, I'll stick to the pork items.
(3)Jennifer M.
Food was just ok, nothing to brag about or ever stop by there for. The slaw was tasteless, cornbread was too sweet (I like it somewhat sweet), meat was bland even with added sauce and the only thing ok was their hush puppies. Definitely don't recommend going here.
(2)Samantha B.
Had the pork sandwich and hush puppies. The sauces weren't anything to write home about. The hush puppies were standard, but alright. The sweet tea was probably the best thing I had. Not to say that I won't go back, but it's certainly not my first choice for Richmond BBQ.
(3)Blue B.
We have ordered takeout several times. The chicken barbecue is my favorite. My husband prefers the pork. Great barbecue.
(4)Brent P.
I always tend to think the same when I order and receive my meal at Q, "that's all I get for the $$"? However, I do not believe that I have ever left there either hungry or dissatisfied, I've never made it to dessert. We started going after (like some others) having heard of it and Tuffy Stone's "Cool Smoke" team on BBQ Pitmasters. The atmosphere is not what you would expect but it is always clean, fast and friendly. Depending on what time you go it may or may not be busy, it seems that around 6 is when things pick up, especially on the weekends. If they were located closer to home or work I would get takeout during the week.
(4)Geoff A.
I'm an MBN and KCBS certified judge and have had BBQ from hundreds of places. The ribs here tonight were probably the best I've ever had in a restaurant. Pulled pork was great, beans and potato salad was a 10! This place will not disappoint you.
(5)Shannon W.
One of the best BBQ joints in Richmond. Fresh ingredients. Food is always hot and tasty. Meat is never dry or tasteless. It's just overall yumminess.
(5)Jane W.
The food at this place was very dry, and had little flavor. We ordered 3 different meals. 1.the pulled pork sandwich came with no sauce on it and was very dry. 2. The Q salad with chicken has dark meat. I was expecting breast meat. 3. The rib sampler was good tasting and had lots of meat. The food comes out very quickly and they have very good customer service. Very nice people, not the best food.
(3)Cliff M.
It's not the best BBQ I've had in Richmond but it's still pretty tasty. I've ordered carryout a couple of times and have been pretty pleased with the food. The wings are awesome. I also enjoyed the brisket, ribs and collared greens. My brother loved the corn pudding - I was too full to try it. Only downer was that the hushpuppies were on the dry side. Service at the counter is efficient.
(4)Ben P.
Fantastic! The ribs were a great combo of flavor and fall-off-the-bone tenderness. They were huge too! While pre-dressed, they still left room to try one of their great sauces. The staff was incredibly friendly and service was quick. For a chain, and fast order spot, this was great BBQ.
(4)Liz P.
Traveling thru the Richmond area on my way back to NOVA. I been on a quest for fantastic BBQ... My prayers have been answered! What amazing, quality meat! I had the two meat combo with pulled pork/ ribs and sides of Mac and cheese and pineapple hot relish. Mac and cheese was off the hook... in a bechamel sauce. The pineapple hot dish was more of a desert. Picking up a container of the pulled pork to take home. Everything is delish!!!
(5)Lisa K.
Great lucky find driving anywhere around the 95/ 295 bypass and not hard to get to. Barbeque excelkent with variety of mix sauces to your taste. Sides really good ( we had corn pudding, Cole slaw, pineapple and hush puppies which were the only one I'd give a 4/5). Will be back when through again.
(5)Sarah P.
Avoid anything here but the pork and you'll be pretty happy. Definitely not a BBQ purist's place to come for real Q. Yes, I'm from Texas so I'm a BBQ snob, I have also learned just to not order beef in this part of the country. Virginians are really good at pork, not beef. Texans are good at beef, not so much pork. I pre-judged this place because it is in a strip-center. In my experience, no good BBQ has ever been made in a strip-center. The inside is also very sterile and bland, like any chain restaurant in a strip-center. It is nice and clean though and the service was friendly. The pig snout lights were pretty funny. I tried a sample of the brisket that was offered and it was pretty bad. It is cooked in a barbecue oven and was dry and obviously pre-cut. So I went with pork ribs and chicken, everyone else with me went with pulled pork. The chicken I received was also pulled which I didn't realize, I wish the menu specified that. It was OK, but I'm not a big fan of pulled chicken in general. The ribs were good, I liked those and everyone I was with said the pulled pork was really good. They have a nice selection of bottled beer. They were out of banana pudding for the day. If you come here just stick with something porky as far as meat goes, I didn't think anything else was very good.

Wanted something different so my granddaughter and I decided to try the Q. We went in about 4:45 and the place was empty except for 2 other couples. We first thought we had made a mistake but decided to give it a try. We told the cashier we had never been there before and ask if she had any suggestions, she said pretty much every thing is good so my granddaughter decided to get the BBQ chicken sandwich (the regular one) with fries and I chose the 2 meat combo with ribs and brisket, coleslaw and corn pudding. Our food was delivered real quick and was hot and flavorful. We were really surprise at the size of the portions, a lot of food. The ribs were real meaty and the seasoning was great. The brisket was not like most brisket I have had more like roast beef but had a good taste. Coleslaw was just so so and the corn pudding needed a little more seasoning but was good. My granddaughter said her BBQ chicken sandwich was really good and there was a lot of it and she was full before she could finish. I too was full before before I finished my food. I would go there again but I will try something besides the brisket. If you decide to try this restaurant try the pork it's really good. Oh and by the way this was a very clean place with friendly personnel.
(4)Jenny P.
Great lunchtime bbq spot. Their hushpuppies are pretty amazing. I also like that there are so many locations.
(5)Ansley O.
I think if you're really into legit, good, really REAL BBQ, you'll know that Q is just not that. I tried it. It is just.... blah. I'd rather go to Buz and Ned's and that's saying something because, they're not really all that great either. I wish Richmond would just attract SOMEONE who wants to make BBQ the way it's supposed to be made.
(2)Lisa B.
Super tasty BBQ just a tad too expensive for this family of 5 (3 of them being young kids) spent over $45 last night with no leftovers because serving size is on the low side.
(3)Geoff J.
This place has the best BBQ in town bar none. And the staff is always friendly. I wish they offered a traditional Buffalo wing sauce for the wings, but the HotZing sauce works almost as well. They offer a hot dog for their kids plate, but if your not in the mood for BBQ try it even if you're an adult. It's a little pricy but worth it. The ambiance is comfortable and the plethora of trophies decorating the place are a justified boast to the quality of the food they serve. My only complaint is the lack of a changing table in either bathroom. Otherwise the place is laid back and family-friendly.
(5)Joe K.
I am a fan of BBQ pit masters and happened to stumble upon Q. I jumped at the chance and ordered a couple items like the pulled pork with slaw combo with onion rings, hush puppies and a very small side of Mac and cheese. I choose the hot sauce at the table and was not disappointed. The manager was very friendly and we talked a bit a the menu. The restaurant was absolutely spotless. Clean and the decor was cool. Very inviting place to eat. I HIGHLY recommend Q BBQ.
(4)Mike D.
Way too expensive for the small portions you get. For a chain that you order at a counter and bus your own table it is waaaay too pricey!
(1)Krista K.
Delicious slow smoked vinegar barbeque. It was my first time here, and the man at the counter offered us samples of the different meats to choose from. I had the pork barbeque plate with cornbread, cole slaw & pineapple hot dish. There are 3 barbeque sauces to try on every table, sweet, original & hot--slight variations on perfection. The meal was ultra tender & flavorful even without the added sauce. The iced tea is also excellent. The cornbread was only okay, but the cole slaw & my friend's hush puppies were exceptional. I had never heard of pineapple hot dish, I found it tasty but a bit overwhelmingly sweet & rich. Overall great value & seriously amazing barbeque.
(5)Martin A.
Great Carolina barbecue, collards are well seasoned, wonderful cornbread and great deserts. Good customer service overall.
(5)Sarah P.
Q Bbq never disappoints! Went there for lunch today and it was so yummy! The service is always friendly and helpful. I got the pork bbq sandwich w/fries and, of course, their AMAZING lemonade. My son got the chicken fingers kids' meal with mac and cheese. He couldn't finish everything, but he polished off the mac and cheese, which was super good. I had the rest of his lunch for dinner ... making it last over two meals helps me feel better about spending so much money at lunch! :)
(4)Carisa M.
First time coming here, so we over- ordered. Hush puppies are amazing!!! At first, I was thinking, oh jeez, a fast food line type place, but pleasantly surprised. We took nothing home even my picky one year old liked it! Good stuff

I was recently in the mood for BBQ and a road trip. I had visited the Q a few years ago when I was driving from North Carolina to Pittsburgh, and figured that it was time for a return trip. Yes, I still live in Pittsburgh, and I decided to drive six hours to Richmond, VA, for BBQ. Needless to say, I was not disappointed. I got into Richmond at about 7:30 p.m. on a Sunday night with my significant other, and was a touch fearful that whatever was left towards the end of the night would be dried out, or that they would be out of brisket. Luckily, my fears were misplaced. I ordered a brisket combo platter with mac and cheese, and hush puppies. Dinner was enhanced by free cornbread and a Cheerwine (which is hard to come by in the north). The brisket was spectacular- moist, full of flavor, and a perfect fit with the Q's original sauce. The mac and cheese was creamy and not oily, a few steps above what you typically receive at a lot of barbeque joints. The hush puppies are very heavy, but quite tasty. Suffice to say, if you're in the mood for something light, don't go for the hush puppies (then again, if you want something light, you probably wouldn't be going to a BBQ restaurant). My companion chose the pulled pork, which I sampled, and was very pleased with. We decided to stop at the Q again the next day on our way out of town. This time, I went for a pulled pork sandwich, mac and cheese, and the brisket chili. I have had better brisket chili in Pittsburgh (from Yinzburgh BBQ), but it was still very tasty and possessed just the right spicy kick. My pulled pork sandwich hit the spot, moist, smoky, and the perfect vessel to be slathered in BBQ sauce. We made sure that we bought several bottles of sauce to tide us over until our next trip. We found the staff at the Q to be helpful and friendly, and the restaurant is very clean and well-maintained. While we did stop at a few other places in Richmond during our brief trip that were great (the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the Virginia State Capitol Building, and the botanical gardens), both my lady and I would have left Richmond happy if the Q had been our only stop. You simply cannot go wrong with top notch BBQ served in a friendly, welcoming atmosphere.
(5)Matt C.
Their ribs are as good as any I've had anywhere around the country. I also think their sides are better now than 2 years ago. A truly great place for BBQ in a city full of great BBQ options.
(4)Monika B.
Best ribs of my life!!!And I've tasted a ton through out the whole country. I live two hours away in NoVa and I would drive down at any chance to eat there again. The Mac and cheese is really good too. Plus you can get rib slabs to-go. Always a bonus for me.
(5)Steve S.
I have eaten at all three Q BBQ`s in RVA and this restaurant is turning into one of my favorite joints in town. The ribs are so mouth watering, moist and meaty and got a tour of their smokers and they use hickory. These ribs are fall off the bone and don`t need much sauce. I ordered the greens and slaw for my sides and their prices are more reasonable than some of the overhyped BBQ joints in town! A must stop in Richmond and a new favorite on my drive back up North.
(5)Eric H.
Great barbeque, delicious sides, simple decor and friendly staff. What more could you want?
(5)Dan H.
Stopped in and couldn't decide between the brisket and pulled pork sandwich and the guy behind the counter wouldn't lean me either way so I went with the brisket + baked beans and hush puppies. I'd say it was about average. Looked pretty good but texture was a bit tough and didn't have a ton of flavor...could have used more time in the smoker. I liked the barbeque sauce though. Beans didn't have any meat in them even though they supposedly do. Good hush puppies!
(3)Rob S.
Completely crazy for this place. Great ribs and briskets, sides are very tasty and the pine apple dessert is so unique! Service is really decent and we've done take out and eat in many times.
(4)Jazmyn P.
Our favorite BBQ spot. Needless to say, we have a frequent diner card. I heard about the place from BBQ Pit-masters, and was skeptical due to most of the reviews I read back then being bad. But a year later, I decided to say "what the hell" and ventured in. The atmosphere is appealing, and the staff is always pleasant. The food is really good, and you can tell it's all made in-house. Flat out amazing. :)
(5)Mike M.
Chicken sandwich was good. Moist. The sauce was real good. The bread was run of mill sandwich bread. Ribs were great. For a fast food place this is simple and good.
(4)Dana Z.
Just like some people are beer snobs... or wine snobs... I'm kind of a BBQ snob. Few places I've tried have lived up to my current leader (Blues BBQ) And I have yet to still try Buz & Neds... but anyway... Q BBQ passed the test. I favor Carolina over Memphis, but they had both options available at the catered event I went to. They also had an assortment of sauces. The mac & cheese was GOOD. Real good. I wasn't crazy about their bbq pulled chicken. I think it was the texture. I didn't try the beans (beans beans they're good for your heart.) The guys who were working the catering party were real nice and wanted to make sure you enjoyed it. I know everyone was giving them positive feedback and they were happy to make everyone at the party happy.
(4)Chuck G.
My wife and I have become regulars here. Its important to note that this is not for barbecue only. If you know someone who loves barbecue, but don't want to partake yourself, they offer an excellent, fresh salad and lots of sides that you can make a meal out of. Three points: First, (obviously) the food is first class. My personal favorites are the chicken wings, the greens and the pineapple hot dish. Second, it is very consistent. If you like something here, you can go back in a week or a month, order the same dish, and be confident you'll get the same wow experience. Third, it's super clean. If you're like me, you wouldn't want to see where food is being handled and stored in most restaurants. These folks have a big picture window in the room where the food is prepared, and it is spotless. Maybe not important to everyone, but, to me, the minimum requirement.
(5)Deborah B.
One of my favorites AND a local establishment. This trip I ordered the brisket with hush puppies and corn pudding. The service was just ok, but the location is great and the food was delicious. IMHO, visit anytime you're in proximity to one of the three locations: VA Center Commons, Midlothian Village or Hampton!
(4)Bradley T.
In my opinion, the trouble with reading reviews for chains like this is that--BBQ is best when made with TLC by an experienced pitmaster, and when it's not--results can vary. For example, contrary to other reviews, the ribs I had were cooked perfectly. Not falling off the bone but came clean off the bone with a simple pull or tug. They had a wonderful crispy bark that added texture to the sweet meaty center. The only issue I had with the ribs is that they weren't smoky enough. Unfortunately, the brisket and pulled pork were also lacking any serious smoke that you'd expect from even the worst BBQ fare. I also had the mac and cheese that was nothing above pedestrian. I wanted to like this place, I'm a Tuffy Stone fan. But the food (three stars for the ribs only) was as cookie cutter as the predictable "Chipotle-like" vibe the atmosphere itself emitted and really lacked any character. There's no way this place could compete with even a decent mom-and-pop BBQ stop.
(3)j m.
I'm a big fan of the show "BBQ Pit Masters". After watching the show I decided to try one of the Q BBQ restaurants owned by Tuffy Stone the next time we were in or around Richmond. I was expecting a restaurant set off on its own with smoke coming from the top, but that was not the case. It was located in a strip mall type area, if you will. That immediately turned me off, and almost made me not want to go, but I was hungry. Anyhow, we walked in and the place was empty. Another sign that we should never have gotten out of the car. However, after ordering, and demolishing, the ribs and brisket, I was extremely satisfied. Actually, I wasn't satisfied, it was so good I wanted more. Since I couldn't eat another morsel, I got take out so I could have more later. I guess the moral of the story here is, don't judge a book by its cover.
(4)Kimmy M.
This will not disappoint! They catered an event that I attended & the good was outstanding! Brisket, pulled pork, baked beans, macaroni & cheese.... Everything was wonderful! It will definitely be on my to do list whenever I'm in the area!
(4)Terry J.
$22 for two plates and drinks. My beef was smoky goodness with beans and potato salad. My wife's pulled pork was a very modest serving with greens and cole slaw. The quality is good for this small, Richmond chain. My only gripe is that the portions seemed smallish by comparison. My wife's pork was a very, very small portion. Frankly, I am embarrassed that I didn't return it as it was that small. There were several sauce options and the Original was my favorite. The place was squeaky clean and the service staff friendly. I will go back and give them a second try.
(3)Mark K.
Fantastic BBQ from an experienced BBQ'er. Their ribs are always tasty and well cooked. I like their brisket, but their pork is just ok. I LOVE their hushpuppies, and their pies are great too. Wish they had a location closer to the city, but I think it is worth the drive!
(5)Laura B.
Awful. We placed a large order for lunch and my pork BBQ sandwich had bones in it. The baked beans had no flavor and it was more bean stock than actual beans. Really disappointing.
(1)Jt T.
Meh not bad but nothing special. Ribs were decent but brisket didn't have much of a Smokey taste to it plus they chop their brisket and don't offer it sliced. Good brisket should be sliced. Prices are pretty reasonable but I probably won't go back.
(2)Brody L.
FOOD: like a home cooked meal...but even better. This local owner has a fantastic recipe and the awards to prove it. Servers: friendly and responsive Beverage list: a smal craft brew selection Atmosphere: casual Decor: clean and good colors with trophies and cookout posters on the wall. Restrooms: clean
(5)Arun M.
I like Q's but the problem with this location is CONSISTENCY. I waited awhile before Yelping about this location and since then I've been to this location several times during different times of the week and what I found was that Friday afternoon is the worst time to eat there. Maybe someone is colored blind, maybe they are sacrificing quality for quantity, or maybe someone doesn't know what they are doing. The food, especially the ribs, were overcooked and dry. HOWEVER, other days that I've eaten there the food was a lot better. Of all days you would think they would pay extra attention on Friday afternoon. Friday, the day that most people treat themselves to a good meal after a long week of work. Friday, the day that most people don't mind spending money because they just got paid. Yes, FRIDAY! So people who are reading this review and would like to give this place a try, try not to go on..wait for it....Friday.
(3)Jorina N.
I went here based on yelp reviews. Was craving bbq so it was the closest on en route. cleanliness: 5 stars service: 5 stars food: 2 stars (think earlier reviews over-hyped this place)
(3)Tom S.
I've had their pulled pork sandwiches a couple of times. I had to add a lot of sauce to get any flavor. It was OK.
(3)Andrew G.
Great BBQ. Mostly a Texas style place, which I see.plenty of in Cali, yet the delicious pulled pork was not Texas style. I wanted carolina style and they delivered! They have great carolina sauce. The hush puppies are terrific. The meal comes with a piece of cornbread, which frankly was mediocre. Baked beans are great as well. The layout is a little weird since you have to stand in the dining area to see the menu. Minus one star because.the sides, while excellent, didn't quite match the quality of the pork. Kudos to the staff, who were engaged and super friendly. I would definitely come back here the next time I'm around. Great respite from the freeway!
(4)Gator S.
Sweet sauce is the worst . Portions are very small. Mac and cheese tasted like it just came off the Cisco truck. For the amount of awards they have thought it would be a lot better. On the bright side , fast service and the hot BBQ sauce was pretty damn good
(1)B H.
This was the best restaurant / fast-service BBQ joint I've ever had east of Tennessee. Their ribs had a great flavor, nice tug, not dry at all...would take off a point for being thin... but hey...I'll take it b/c they actually smoked them correctly. The brisket again had a great flavor with a little spice and juicy. Though good, I would skip the brisket and just focus on ribs next time. Leave the brisket to the Texans who are born professionals. They also had EXTREMELY friendly service, hospital clean establishment/restrooms, & modern, large eating area with a nice viewing area for the baseball game on TV.
(4)Karen R.
So I grew up eating Carolina Bbq. And while I do still love their Bbq, I have definitely fallen in love with Texas style Bbq at Q Barbeque. They give you a generous portion and it is amazing. They have different combos and sides you can choose from depending on how hungry you are! They also have diet Dr. Pepper lol, which makes me happy! I also love their potato salad, which was a complete surprise to me as I don't like any restaurant potato salad. It is made up of red potatoes I believe and is somewhat of a mixture between white and yellow color. It's absolutely perfect! And if you're looking for dessert, their coconut creme pie is to die for. The staff at this location is super nice as well! Definitely a place to check out for Bbq lovers.
(5)Julie W.
From a KC girl - this is good Q. Pork and beef are great; chicken okay, sauce marginally meh. Clean location, friendly staff.
(3)Tony A.
Q Barbeque is one of those places that makes living in Richmond a blessing. It's a small barbeque chain with only four locations and I'm thankful to live near one. Q Barbeque was founded by George "Tuffy" Stone aka The Professor. His roots are pure Richmond and the fruits of his labor have been bestowed upon us through Q Barbeque. For me it's all about the spare ribs. I'm a spare ribs junkie and if you can't produce good spare ribs don't you dare call yourself "Barbeque" I had a craving for ribs so strong one Saturday it could have given a pregnant woman a run for her money. I made a bee line for Q Barbeque. It had been a year since my last Q Barbeque run. At that time (circa 2013) the ribs were way overcooked and dry. I wasn't on Yelp then and wrote off Q Barbeque for about a year. After all, when it comes to spare ribs in Richmond, there is a huge name to contend with and it rhymes with Fuzz. I walked in and ordered a full rack to-go with a pint of slaw. My order was ready in less than two minutes and I drove home to enjoy my food. The smell of those ribs on the drive home was almost unbearable. That first bite was nothing short of magical. It went beyond my expectations. The ribs were juicy, flavorful, smokey, and exactly what I craved. This batch was flawless! I'll let the other Yelpers critique the sides, the pork, and their dining experience. For me, these ribs are world-class and totally worthy of 5 stars.

I was very impressed with this place. It was stumbled upon by accident in route to Center of the Universe Brewing Co.. I am glad it was found. The ribs were cooked perfect with great flavor. They were not drowned in sauce and perfectly tender. The brisket had great flavor as well and wasn't too greasy. The pork, the pork was nice. Again, not overly greasy. I ordered potato salad and it was tasty. A little more mustard than what I would use, but very tasty non the less. I also ordered Mac & Cheese which I am very picky about and although I wouldn't write home about, it was very good. The sauces provided at the table were all delicious. I mixed the original with the spicy and was delicious! The staff was on point and the cleanliness was impressive. If you like BBQ and you are in the area, I would hit this place up. NOTE - Not NC style (which made me happy).

Good pork sandwich and the sweet Tea was good. Clean and casual setting and the banana pudding dessert was great. Give them a try next time you're in the area.

Thanks to the Yelpers and Richmond Tourism on Twitter for helping me on the BBQ trail through VA. Great food and smoky flavor...awesome sauces as well! Looks like a chain restaurant but well worth the visit!

I visited the area again recently and had a craving for BBQ after watching the Pitmasters show on TV. Since I had sampled the pork and brisket previously, I had a hankering for some ribs. Damn, those ribs were awesome. They had some good meat to them as well as incredible flavor. They pretty much fell off the bone, and I savored each and every bite. The only other thing new I tried this time were the hush-puppies and the pineapple side dish. The hush-puppies were what you'd expect, and the pineapple side dish was pretty much like a pineapple upside down cake, very tasty. Again, I'm very impressed with this operation, and I'll be sure to visit every time I'm in town for business.

Food was excellent. Between the two of us we had a brisket and chicken sandwich with hush puppies and corn pudding. Excellent BBQ sauce, wish we bought a bottle, I guess we have to go back!!!

I had heard good things about Q and was kind of excited about trying it out. It really looks like the new fad is having your order at the counter and then going and seating yourself, with them bringing your food to your table, finding you with they little red number they give ya. Sometimes I like this, sometimes I don't. For some reason I wasn't a big fan of this at Q. Maybe because I had to let 3-4 people by me first while I was trying to figure what I wanted from their menu overhead and behind the counter. I went with their salad with one meat and a small drink, which came out around $11.00. Me and my buddy sat outside, which I like they have outdoor seating. After a while the lady brought out our food, think it took her a minute to figure out we were actually outside. It looked like a good size portion, but when I started eating it, I realized it was mostly fluff. They cut up some Romain lettuce in big chunks and made it look bigger then it was. There were 2 cherry tomatoes that they cut in half and 5 slices of cucumber.. that's it to the salad. On the top in the middle they put an ice scooper of BBQ. The Pork BBQ was pretty good. Overall I thought it was good tasting, but for a $11 salad at lunch I felt it was way overpriced for what you actually got. Only giving it an 3 star due to the fact it tasted good and I might go back to give it another shot trying a sandwich. Service was good and everyone was nice.

It's hit or miss here; there are still issues with consistency. Service is fine - not great, not bad - food is where I have my issues. Have had pork bbq sandwich before several times and sometimes it is dry /no flavor; sometimes wet with great taste. Ribs were fall-off-the-bone good one time; dry the other. Brisket was consistently BAD the three times I went there- overcooked, soaked in sauce, really salty and inedible. Slaw is average; mac and cheese average; hush puppies average. I just don't understand the 4 and 5 stars. There's better BBQ for the money and more for the money at Buz and Neds or other places. Average all around.

Sadly I have yet to find really GREAT BBQ place anywhere near Richmond. Q Barbeque was ok. My brisket wasn't dry so that's good, my coleslaw was too sweet for my liking, and I so wanted to love the pineapple dish...but I didn't. My aunt was happy they do dry rub on their ribs but she wasn't blown away either. The feel of the place reminds me of Chipotle in barbeque form, nothing to write home about.

We've tried this place a couple of times since my last review, and it's been pretty consistent. The staff seems to have the hang of things. It seems to be a place for the older Hanover County crowd, maybe looking for someone to carry the torch from the Smokey Pig. I've only had the Pork Ribs, and they've been spot on. Anxious to try other things.

The people at the counter were very friendly (I got it take-out). We ordered both the pork and brisket platters. The food was okay, average bbq. Everything had a sweet flavor, even the hot bbq sauce and greens were sweet. For the price there are several better options in town.

The first time I laid eyes on a Q at the Midlothian location, I was attracted to the cute sign. Come on, the pig noes? I loved it! My husband and I were so excited for the location to open by VCC, so when my husband found out that it was opening on Valentine's Day, we made a date of it (and marked off the first stop in our Richmond Food Passport!). The crowd was huge, but the staff was friendly, helpful, and handed out coupons for our patience. We've been back several times since, and have enjoyed it every time. I prefer the brisket and the chicken. Both are tender and melt in your both tasty! I love their garlic infused vinegar on the spicy BBQ (and I'm not generally a Carolina style fan!). The brisket being cubed threw me as I'm used to the Texas style, but the owner explained to us why it was (to keep in moist!) and quickly told us the story behind Q. I've had to watch Pitmasters a few times since! We've been back several times, and every time has been delicious. If you're getting take out, you can probably get away with getting the kids portion sandwich -- it's plenty big and significantly cheaper. And if it's not quite enough, just make sure your friend gets enough for you to steal some from their plate. :) And don't skip dessert -- the coconut cream pie was delicious and the perfect way to end a meal!

Convenient location, spotless interior, friendly smiling staff. Food was great. I had a small pork sandwich and onion rings. The good came quickly, and the portions were generous (looked like about 1/3 pound of pork). I sampled the meat from the sandwich and found it well cooked, well seasoned, and just right smoke (too many places over smoke, which doesn't play well). Combined on the sandwich with a little sauce and coleslaw, it was a great combination of complimenting flavors. The onion rings were hot, crispy, and looked homemade. Good value. Cost including drink and tax was $10 and change. You clear your own table, eliminating tipping. The restaurant's concept is to order at the register, get a number, get your own drink, and the is food brought to your table. In front of me in line was a group of about 20 people. The manager suggested to them that they be seated, and that they would be provided waitress service. I asked the mgr and he explained that he thought that the group would be happier and enjoy it more if served together. A great example of going out of the way to enhance the customer's experience. This is truly caring about the customer, a concept that seems to be rare these days.

In my opinion, BBQ is only enhanced by a wide array of sides to choose from. I ordered wings with a side of mac and cheese and collard greens while my husband ordered ribs and pulled pork with hush puppies and beans. There were only two BBQ sauces on the table to use so this isn't the type of true BBQ place with 10+ sauces but it was perfectly good for me! The meat was good and we are almost all of our meals. What excited me the most and made my ordering decision the most difficult was all of the glorious side options! Onion rings, cole slaw, fries, corn pudding!!! GET IN MY BELLY! If I'm back in the area, I'd return. Only reason I didn't give 5 stars was the lack of variety in BBQ sauces (if I'm being really picky) and it was a little expensive for over the counter BBQ.

Oh my, was this place excellent! The BBQ here is to die for, but there are a few quirks. We sought this location out as the proprietor Tuffy Stone is a judge on BBQ Pitmasters. He speaks very highly about his type of BBQ, so we wanted to check it out. It was on the way back from vacation, so off we went! First, the initial impression of this place is that of a stylized yuppy-type BBQ joint. The store was very clean with nary a hint of smoky goodness lurking within. I mean, everything was super clean and new looking. We almost turned around and left because good BBQ can't possibly be found in such a place. :-) We ordered 4 meals from the counter and it was delivered to our table a few minutes later. While we waited, we found a table and sat down. The decor is comprised of cool posters from BBQ competitions and trophies. It was well done, but still had the aura of a place that a decorator had created. The food arrived and the four of us dug in. Initially, I was impressed with the quantity of food. I ordered the 2 meat plate (ribs and brisket) with fries and beans. The plate overflowed! Others in my party ordered the half rack of ribs, another ordered BBQ chicken. The ribs blew me away! They were excellent! The brisket was good as well, but came chopped. I normally like sliced, but the chopped brisket had a good smoke flavor and did not contain any discernable fat (the chopped brisket in some other places contains so much fat that it's difficult to enjoy). Again, the ribs were superb! In fact, they were so good that I placed a second order for a full rack for the family! The meat was tender with a good amount of smoke flavor, but was not so tender that it was falling off the bone. They were perfectly done. There were three flavors of BBQ sauce on the table; an Original, one that was hot, and one that was sweet. The hot sauce was perfect, but my youngest son (16) liked the sweet best. I have to say, my first impression was totally wrong. Q BBQ proves that you can be pretty, clean and have great BBQ! I found only three quirks...1). The material covering the seats of the booths did not allow one to slide in or out. It was rough and had the texture of suede-ish material. 2). The brisket was chopped with no option to get sliced. and 3). The cups and straws were too tiny. The cups were 16 or 20 ounces and the straws were really small...not coffee stirrer small, but they were too small for our taste. We'd like to see larger cups and McDonald-size straws. That said, the ribs were so good that none of these matter much. I can't recommend Q Barbeque enough. This place rocks!

I really was dieing to try this place as soon as I saw a mysterious q with s pig nose pop up in the corner lot of this strip mall. So much so that I even showed up while they were still working on it. Hey there were a lot of folks inside. But to the smoked meat of the review. The bbq is.......good. its actually smoked with good quantity and quality. The meat is large chunk pulled. The sides are all excellent as far as I've eaten. It may not be a typical item, but I am a big fan of the pickle spear. The fountain Cheerwine is a nice little bonus, even though I rarely drink sodas. Cool place, with really good food, and a really good restaurant layout.

We're all friends here, right? So I'm going to let you in on a guilty secret...I went here THREE TIMES WITHIN FOUR DAYS. And this is saying something, because -- except for my dad's famous ribs -- I'm not a fan of BBQ in general. So either I'm officially insane or this is good stuff. Probably both. Anyway, Q is a great addition to this part of Glen Allen, which is sorely lacking in culinary diversity and finesse. In a sea of chain restaurants, Q is a welcome addition. I was skeptical of this location because its previous incarnations were an Italian restaurant and then pizzeria, and I wasn't really regretting the demise of the overrated Smokey Pig five miles up the road in Ashland. What sells me on Q's are the quality of their meats, friendly staff and clean, attractive interior. When dining out, I see food as either fast food or sit-down, and my experience has been mixed with the "order at the counter, then wait for it to come out" process...but Q's pulls it off really well. The person bringing it out is always cheerful when serving, and asks if anyone needs anything else, including drink refills. I enjoy the fact that their meats come out "unadorned" and not smoky - they're lean and tasty, and there's very little gristle or fat in their beef brisket, pulled pork or chicken, and ribs. The selection of sauces (original, sweet, or spicy) isn't remarkable, but I was quite content with a small squirt of the original. I agree with the other reviewer who said not to put anything on your BBQ until you've tasted your food. This kind of BBQ (whatever it is) isn't sauce-laden; to me, it's one big homage to the glory of meat. Lots of it, piled high and hot, waiting for an appreciative carnivore. Q offers a plethora of side items, and all of them are tasty or made with a twist, and there's something for everyone. Most noteworthy (and my favorites) are the potato salad, coleslaw, macaroni and cheese, and hush puppies. The "hot pineapple" dish (very evocative of a pineapple upside down cake or bread pudding) is interesting but too sweet for my own palate, though it might've been interesting to eat it WITH the meat. The 'fresh cut'-looking fries were surprisingly disappointing, with a weird, chemical-tasting coating that not only is repulsive but really detracts from the taste of the BBQ altogether. I wish they'd serve the good ol' crinkle cut or shoestrings instead. This is a family place and thankfully I haven't come across unruly or boisterous toddlers yet. The staff is very genial and keeps the place EXTREMELY clean. Give it a go - BBQ is one of those things that we too often "politicize" - I couldn't tell you if Q's is better, worse or the similar to NC, TN, TX, MO, etc...who cares? It's yummy. And this is coming from a girl who once said that BBQ was invented to hide the taste of rancid meat. Kudos to Q's for their bare-nakedly delicious version. No surprise that they've won a bunch of trophies and made me happily eat my words.

So far, the best BBQ place in/around Richmond. Everybody I bring to Q absolutely LOVES it. Great food, service, and price. Personally, I always get the ribs. They're great. Along with their baked beans and pineapple hot dish. They have Nehi sodas, too!

First time here only due to Tully and "BBQ Pitmasters". I truly wanted to try his famous smoked ribs and see the smoke ring these judges talk about. My hubby and I ordered the 4 meat platter ($20) and my six year old ordered the 3 rib plate kid's meal ($10). It was definitely a lot of meats but we could've done without the beef brisket (dry), chicken (meh..), and the potato roll that came straight out of the bag and onto our plate. I had the hush puppies everyone was raving about here and mine was almost burnt brown, however, the inside was nice and moist. We also had the greens which were sweet (?). I like my greens tart and sour so that was quite different for my liking. We also had the onion rings which weren't half bad. Due to our recent visit, I only gave it 3 stars for what we tried. The staff was great and beaming with southern hospitality. The ribs were tender and we were able to take a bite out of the ribs as the judges spoke of on the show. The smoke ring was beautiful. The pulled pork was delicious and moist. I can truly say you can tell the difference between grilled and smoked food here! I definitely will come back when I am in town but will try other sides. More on the owner, watch Destination America's BBQ Pitmasters. It is a great show. It has even convinced my husband that he needs a smoker ASAP. Due to my daughter, we will also start reviewing bathrooms. She gave this one a full 5 stars! Very clean and each stall had their own room deodorizer. She was VERY pleased.

A toss between three stars and four stars. I would have given it four stars only they over cook the french fries. I like the fry slightly limp. The cook it so it is CRISP, no limpness at all to it. Just to hard and crunchy. The next time I go in I'll tell them if my fries have no give then they can recook them or take them off the bill. Pork sandwich was really good. Onion rings really good. I would be back but it is a long drive from beautiful downtown Dale City.

First of all I'm from texas so, I'm a little biased when it comes to BBQ. Went in with high expectations but came out with sick feeling in my stomach and a pretty large dent in my wallet. Tried a little of everything, brisket was extremely dry, pork was nothing special, sides were average. The ribs and chicken were pretty good though. The restaurant was clean and the decor was nice. I'm definitely not sold on the Q. Need a little more emphasis on quality. I'm sure the owner is a great competition pit master but I get better BBQ from little mom and pop restaurants.
(2)Brent B.
The brisket was very good. Nice beef flavor, and very tender and juicy. The ribs were a big disappointment. They were over cooked, a bit dry and lacked flavor. I thought the smoke flavor was very slight and overall they were fair. The spicy sauce was good, with a healthy amount of spice.

My girlfriend and I work for different companies, but deal with a lot of the same caterers, so we've known for quite awhile how amazing Q Barbecue/A Sharper Palate can be. We heard through the grapevine that their second place was going to open closer to our area of operation, and were ready to pounce on it as soon as they had opened. It was just as incredible as we had expected it would be. This is top-notch barbecue for just the right price. Friendly service by people who are interested in their product, and sharing their thoughts on barbecue with their patrons. Practical and affordable combination meals allow you to try a couple of their excellent sides along with your choice of barbecue. There is Cheerwine in the soda fountain!!! Their pies...eh...tasty, but heavy, complicated, and a little dry. They have the food and service down. But, the setup of this location is just "counter"-intuitive [Wait for it...wait for it...]. When you enter the foyer area, you see an empty take-out counter and a dessert case. From there, you're kind of funneled into a narrow chute, where, depending on the line, you're not really given ample space - and therefore time - to mull over your order. This is a southern barbecue restaurant - these kind of customers are NOT going to be as speedy about their order as the counter setup dictates! Anyway, go check it out. One of the best you can get in Richmond, in my opinion. Moist, sweet, smokey meat - but don't you dare put sauce on it before trying it plain!
(4)Mike H.
It was ok....kinda pricey....the portions were good. The pulled pork was tender and juicy but had very little flavor...I mean I think I found bland bbq. I had the 2 meat combo platter with 1 side for $11.75. It came with 4 ribs which were fall off the bone but again not much flavor. They have 3 sauces at the table. All of those were sickly sweet for my taste and the spicy one had no heat. The potato salad side was fine. I dunno but I think there is better bbq around Richmond.
(2)Monica Y.
I'm a fan of BBQ Pitmasters TV show. And we were lucky enough to meet Tuffy for a few minutes while he was cooking for a competition. He was very nice. So we decided to try out his restaurant. It was fabulous. The food is cooked and flavored perfectly. Ribs, brisket and pulled pork all awesome. The sides are great. Definitely worth the try!
(5)Roger Y.
This is the third time I have eaten at Q (once in Midlothian, and twice at Virginia Center Commons), so this will be an aggregated review. For lunch the other day, I ordered the brisket and ribs platter with a side of coleslaw and a soda, which came out to nearly $15.00. The few other times I have gone to Q, I have been pretty impressed. This time however, I was not too impressed. At least not $15.00 impressed, although they do get some credit for having Cheerwine on tap. The three ribs were just okay, and were not "fall-off-the-bone," and were actually pretty dry and looked undercooked. The brisket was better than the ribs, but had quite a bit of fat and gristle on it. The macaroni and cheese tasted like Stouffer's. Definitely pre-made. It seems that, ever since Q has been expanding, their food quality has gone down. I will definitely try them again, I just hope they read this review and tinker with some things.
(3)Randy S.
The BBQ was excellent. The ribs were melt in your mouth good. The corn pudding was good; we never had it before. The onion rings were also very good. Service was great. I would stop in again.
(5)Laura C.
Wow!!! I can't say enough!!! I had an amazing brisket sandwich with slaw, a beer (dead guy by rogue is awesome!) and banana pudding. It was really great! Especially since I wasn't expecting much. I'm not a fan of chain-ish barbeque. Brisket was great! It held enough together to eat in a sandwich, but melted in my mouth as soon as I started chewing. I'd never had banana pudding before, so I'm not certain what it is supposed to taste like, but theirs was great! Totally worth going!!!
(5)Tersa L.
I've eaten at two locations and the meat was very dry. The hush puppies were hard and over cooked. I watch BBQ pitmaster and the owner of Q's should really stop and taste what's being served at each locations. Poor quality, I wouldn't go back for anything.
(1)Marc S.
The second Richmond outpost of a local legend, Q Barbecue opened in the VA Center area last week, and the food is still top notch. Those that lamented the demise of the Smokey Pig have, in what my opinion is, a worthy local option a few miles down the road from Ashland. The space at the VA Center strip mall is a bit more cramped and skinnier than their open and airy Midlothian spot, but they feature a large window that allows patrons to see their meat being smoked in the gigantic smokers on property. The meat choices are all tempting, but I lean (no pun intended) toward the brisket and ribs. The sides range from the standard beans and slaw to their fabulous corn pudding and pineapple dishes. They also feature pies at this location as a test run. Although crowded opening weekend, the service was genuine and friendly, and I know that the Q legend will continue to grow as the food is served at this high quality level. The Smokey Pig has a worthy successor!
(5)Chris T.
You live high on the hog at Q. Despite the sterile suburban strip mall setting, this place is churning out killer 'cue and you will not be disappointed. They now have a free loyalty card so sign up and get the free cookie.
(5)Ross J.
As others have said, I'm a bit of a BBQ snob as well(see the rest of my reviews). I was at the other location shortly after they opened and I was happy with everything but the Chicken. (to be fair it's difficult to make BBQ chicken that isn't dry). I got Brisket, pulled pork and ribs. The pulled pork was good for sure, I didn't get too much bark mixed in but I was happy with it, made a god sandwich with the "spicy" (not really) sauce. The Brisket was the best tasting by far though. I enjoyed every bite of that I took. The ribs tasted great but once again are cheaty ribs. If they fall off of the bone they weren't smoked for the entire time, hot water was involved! That's my qualification of great ribs, when done properly you bite in to it and it practically melts in your mouth, if you pick up the bone and the meat stays on the plate the communist wins!. But In a volume restaurant this may be less possible. We'll certainly be back though.
(4)Carrie D.
I visited Q for the first time last week, and it will probably be my last. I ordered the combo: chicken, pork, hush puppies, and mac n cheese. The chicken's texture was mushy as if it had been overcooked or cooked in too much moisture. Its sauce had no distinctive flavor- no one spice stood out, nor was there any great party of flavors going on. The pork was much the same. I tried two different sauces on the table, and could not taste a difference. They both tasted like store bought BBQ sauce with some garlic and pepper added. They did nothing to help the chicken or pork. The mac n cheese featured overcooked noodles, salty cheese, and not much else. The hush puppies were crunchy outside as they should be, but inside they are too airy and lacked flavor. The only thing this place has going for it is the service. If I want great BBQ in the Richmond area, I'll stick to Buz and Neds, Extra Billy's, or Carter's Pig Pen. Or best of all, my own smoker and grill.
(2)Ward H.
Glad we stopped by and tried it. Delicious, and the restaurant atmosphere was nice and clean. Would definitly go back.
(4)Gary L.
Eat here regulary when I'm in the Richmond area, never been disappointed. Great Q, good price.
(4)Julie B.
Okay barbecue. You have to put the sauce on yourself for the pulled pork (I would rather it come with sauce). I thought the prices were high for the quality And only one side with a combo? Disappointing. The potato salad and beans weren't very good.
(3)David E.
While visiting Richmond this week on business I ate here twice. It's the real deal. The food is really good and the staff is friendly. Service is very quick. They have a nice selection of sides like beans, corn pudding and hush puppies. Well worth the money.
(4)Chris W.
Been here 5 times with the family and every time the BBQ and sides have been impressive. Lunch or dinner, the food is very good and fresh. Highly recommended if you are local or driving by on I95.
(5)Daniel L.
Went to Q since I was right around the corner from it and had seen Tuffy on BBQ Pitmasters. Very clean, upscale building from what's normally associated with barbecue. We had pulled pork, the tenderness was great, but it had way too much smoke flavor in my opinion. The original sauce was standard, nothing exceptional. The sweet sauce was way too sweet. The sides were average, nothing unique or outstanding there. I would have it again, but its not a place I would plan a trip to or anything. I would try something different next time and give the ribs or brisket a try.
